Just found answer to my own question. The trombonist on this classic record is Jack Jenney.
Jenney died in 1945, age 35, in a Los Angeles hospital following surgery for a ruptured appendix,

Soloists Butterfield and Shaw are outstanding, but who is the trombone soloist? He's equally good.

I've heard it said more than a few times that this is the greatest jazz recording ever - arguable but not that far off-base.
