WORLD PREMIERE - Matt Doran - Symphony No 5 - Dedicated to Therese - Clark College Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Donald Appert.
Dr. Matt H. Doran (b. 1921, Covington, KY), Professor Erertus at Mount St. Mary's College, studied composition at the University of Southern California with Ernst Toch, Peter Korn, as well as Hans Eisler, Ernest Kanitz, and Gail Kubik. He also studied orchestration with Lucien Cailliet and arranging with Ingolf Dahl. Dr. Doran has the distinction of receiving the very first Doctor of Musical Arts degree from USC (1953). A composer of well over 200 works, he has composed seven symphonies and eleven operas. Doran has described himself as an "independent" composer with strong leanings toward, melodic, lyric, and contrapuntal textures. As a flutist, pianist, and composer Doran also taught at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi (TX) and Ball State College (IN). His flute studies were with Archie Wade, Jules Furman, and Ary van Leeuwen. He has played in motion picture studio orchestras, the Corpus Christi Orchestra, and the Austin Symphony where he premiered his own concerto. Now retired, he continues to compose and teach privately in Vancouver, WA. His hobies are gardening and performing magic acts!
