Webern invented the soundtrack for "Loony Tunes" I Love it because it's weird and doesn't have a beat I can follow. And I'm a drummer. I can also hear his influence in Zappas music
@ThePianogirl94 Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor makes people think of bats and cathedrals, so I guess nothing had changed in German music in the 200 years between Bach and Webern. But, for me, the experience is dream-like: things are unfamiliar yet constructed out of familiar elements, and my perception of time is heightened.
I think you've missed the point. The point of expressionism is to... sigh... express how you feel. For the atonal composers, this IS that nervousness, mystery, and "je ne sais quoi." To say this music is beautiful the way people say a sunset is beautiful isn't just naive, it's a detriment to the spirit of the music. Don't confuse your subjective reception with the intent of the composer, because you just look like an elitist telling people that you hear something they don't.
@ThePianogirl94 That's fine, but just realize that it's subjective. You may hear a world of pain and conflict, but others may hear a world of, I don't know, beauty and simplicity, or adventure and epiphany. I have no idea what Webern was thinking of when he wrote this, although compared to many others of the time I don't think Webern was obsessed with the "tortured soul." Regardless, I find these pieces absolutely beautiful, and not at all "creepy" - but that's just how I interpret it.
No offense, but serialist music like this creeps me out. I get nervous just listening to it. I know it's representing the tormented feelings of people stuck in a world of pain and conflict, but I'd rather not have those feelings put to music, you know?

He wasn't fucking thinking of a world of adventure when he wrote this. If he was, he was far more screwed in the head than I suspect.
