@quidproquo2004 The actual answer to your question is that in the episode 'Follow The Leader', the resurrected Locke/Smoke monster instructs Richard to tell this version of John that he needs to get everyone back to the island, and in order to do so he is going to have to die.
Therefore, Richard says it because he was instructed to.

The Black smoke takes forms on people who are dead. That's why John needed to die, and the black smoke told richard that in S 6 and then this scene came. o.o well It's confused how he knows it but... the timing was indeed awesome xD. So he turned into locke to gain trust of all the other people and stuff and yeh o_O i think I hope this makes sense...

@TombRaiderFreak105 I've seen season 6 and I'm still confused....

@quidproquo2004 watch S6 and you know.

Why did Richard say "You're gonna have to die, John"? Did he know that Ben would kill him?

Richard is more intersting than Ben and Fake locke,i think he was a slave or something on the black rock and was free by Jacob...

Not a plot hole, man. Not sure if you noticed but Richard remembers the conversation he had with Locke in 1954, that's how he knows that he won't recognize him. Similarly, by saving the island he either means stopping Jughead from detonating the (he doesn't know Faraday wasn't brought back) or getting the losties there at the moment of the incident.
Granted, Flocke didn't instruct Richard to say this, but Richard has a wealth of knowledge and I'm sure inferred it to "help" Locke.
"it's a compass."
"what does it do?!"
"it points north, john."
clutch!
