My sister, my wife and I rewrote a Steve Goodman song as a tribute to my father who passed away on May 23, 2006.

The song of Steve's that I most identify with is The Dutchman, though it was written by Michael Smith. (I uploaded a video of me playing that song on the ukulele)

After rewriting My Old Man for my old man, I asked my wife which one my kids (I have six) was going to rewrite The Dutchman for me after I pass away.

Nice adaptation. Not one of Steve's more well known songs, but it always affected me. His daughter, Roseanne, just came out with a tribute CD, using this as the title song.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I felt odd rewriting Steve's song, mainly because of how it sounded when John Prine did it. Just didn't seem right, but I was limited on time as my father's memorial was in a few days.

And thank you for letting me know about Roseanne's CD, I will likely buy it online within the next few minutes, if it is available.

My old man sold used cars. This is one of my favorite Steve Goodman songs. It always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear Steve sing it. Your version had me misty eyed as well. Your dad and Steve would be proud. Good job. Sorry for your loss.
