@terrho7 It is called Travis picking for a reason. Chet sort of "upgraded" the approach by using three fingers as a matter of course, but the basic style of playing basslines with the thumbpick in a manner that replicates "stride" piano is all Merle.
It kinda reminds me of chet atkins´ tone, clean with a some "slap" delay, maybe some little reverb too (and thumbpick obviously) but this is just my guess.
(the tone of the guitar is very particular in itself though)
