The Happiness of the Katakuris is a 2001 film directed by Takashi Miike, with screenplay by Kikumi Yamagishi. It is loosely based on the South Korean film The Quiet Family. The film is a surreal horror-comedy in the farce tradition, which includes claymation sequences, musical and dance numbers, a karaoke-style sing-along scene, and dream sequences.
I like Miike's work. He's made quite a few good films. I'm still on the fence about this one though. I prefer the original South Korean version. I'm not big on musicals, especially musical films. But somehow it's really stuck with me, and I find myself desiring to see it again. Maybe I'll like it more on the second viewing.
