With a tremendous effort, Tank's Prospect, with Pat Day up, set the existing Preakness record - twelve years after Secretariat's still-disputed 1:53 2/5. Jim McKay and Howard Cosell help set up the race.
Hajji's Treasure would eventually recover and successfully go on to stud.

Pretty awesome finish, wasn't it? It's too bad Secretariat/Northern Dancer grandson Chief's Crown couldn't hold on, but big credit to Pat Day for getting Tank's Prospect to give all he had.

Yes, Howard Cosell was a big fan of horse racing; he did a fine job back in the day.

Curlin was clocked in an extremely quick 1:53.46, but since the other record holders were timed in tenths of a second, their final times could have been anywhere from 1:53.40 - 1:53.59. Going by that, it's tough to determine whose time was fastest. It is very important to note that Secretariat's record-setting Daily Racing Form time in 1973 was achieved without the whip or any real urging at all. Those facts alone still make his Preakness the greatest by far, in my mind.

Hajji's Treasure broke both legs, but was not put down --- the horse (according to the news) was intelligent enough to sit still while being worked on -- and the owners were able to bring him back to Pleasanton California. ---

Thanks cf1970. The book Tarnished Crown, by Carol Flake, focused on Chief's Crown and the 3 year old crop of 1985. I did not follow racing then, but in retrospect the 85' crop was fantastic. Spend A Buck, Chief's Crown, Proud Truth, Creme Fraiche, Tanks Prospect, Stephans Odessey, Skip Trial, Turkoman, Cutlass Reality, Nostalgia's Star, and Skywalker.

When the track was so fast on Preakness day, my friends and I were talking about what a mistake Spend a Buck's connections had made.

It was an incredible letdown without a Triple Crown attempt. This race was widely ignored in the media.

That's heyday of horse racing TV, as far as I'm concerned, the '70s and '80s. Big names like Cosell and McKay and Whitaker and Jimmy the Greek provided a real presence. Cosell at this point had dropped football and boxing. He was doing racing and baseball.

Maybe the connections of Spend a Buck went to Garden State and the $2 Million bonus in the Jersey Derby because they knew they had no shot at the Triple Crown. It was after this race the $5 million bonus was established for 1987.
