NIXON TAPES: Angry at NY Times (Haldeman)

President Richard Nixon talks with his Chief of Staff H. R. (Bob) Haldeman about the press. In particular, he tells Haldeman about Henry Kissinger urging him to do an interview with New York Times reporter James (Scotty) Reston, Sr. Nixon, however, banned all interviews with the New York Times after the paper released the Pentagon Papers and ran an interview that Nixon disliked with Chinese leader Chou Enlai. Nixon was astonished and annoyed that Kissinger would suggest such an interview. He also makes a distinction between print and TV reporters.

One thing that stikes me about Nixon is that for all his faults he was definitely his own man. He wasn't controlled by special interest groups and deep down believed he was doing the right thing for America and not a bunch of fucking criminal profiteers and bankers like the puppet Presidents of today.

Nixon was incredibly perceptive and intelligent. Why in the hell should he have talked to the lapdog lying liberal full court press? They were out to get him from the start and were totally biased.

Sorry, I meant the Post (the paper Woodward and Bernstein worked for. The TIMES is a great paper, the POST is good for things other than accuracy.

I love how Nixon pretty much called the irrelevance of newspapers 40 years ago in the media mix. He was a little ahead of the times, but, not much.
