The best way I can think of to sum up the concept for the F-35 is

"Jack-of-all-trades, master of none (oh yeah, and it can do that whole hovering thing)"

sorry to necro an old YT comment, but I was born in 1988 and the only airplane that I grew up with that could do that was the Harrier. I still wish they had gone ahead and developed the supersonic version of that, imagine something that can land on a skyscraper's executive helipad, but can still break the sound barrier in level flight! (and then some, IIRC the requirements were for at least Mach-2.0+) Unfortunately, penny pinchers got it, like they do most of the rest off the cool stuff... sigh.

I was on the Kennedy for a couple years. I wanted to watch the jets take off the flight deck all that I was allowed. It just looks wierd not seeing the steam come out after the plane takes off. Used to it. Great technology.

there was a seminar recently where the new program head mentioned they are up to around 10 arrestments.

still a way to go to get the hook perfect and more forgiving, but it is able to be landed when its done right.
