In Cuckoo's Nest, The Chief Bromden character and the persecution of Indigineous rights were meant to be the center of attention. The movie failed miserably in this regard. I've heard Fay say the villain was not Nurse Ratchet, it was "the combine" (Industrial dehumanization that eats peoples souls. Jack Nicholson being too short was not much of a reason Kesey had a problem with the film.

I discovered the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest in my adolescence in similar adverse circumstances as Rick Emerson. What I love about Ken Kesey, in spite of the fact that he was such a bad ass tough leader of the pack "Alpha Male" good ole' boy athlete, he was a defender of the underdog and the opressed.
