The M224 60mm mortar is a high-angle weapon used for close-in support of ground troops. The M224 system consists of the tube, bipod, baseplate and sight unit. This smooth bore system can be gravity-fired or fired by using a manual spring-loaded firing system.

  • @Voidhead I'd say pretty hard simply because it's dumb fire. The only thing you can sort of control is how far you want it to land. Even then, there is still a margin for error because of wind direction and speed.

  • How hard is it to hit a 10 x 10 ft target from, say, 1000 yards? I don't know anything about mortars.

  • 26th ID

  • is it live ammo? why is it so quiet? I believe many other mortars requires the soldier to stand aside and cover their ears from the blast noise

  • @astrialkil the advantage of a 60 is its rate of fire believe me when you have two or three 60mm mortar teams dropping them in rapid succession the effect can be devastating against infantry and light vehicles.

  • Who are the guys firing those?

  • @Shawntehnub in the handheld version it is designed to be carried by on person, there is no tripod and a lightened base plate

  • @Shawntehnub I think 3 people can , and if you convert the mortar to a "ball" mortar by dropping the base plate and replacing it with a "steel pot" helmet , 2 people can carry it. Maybe this is why they came out with rifle grenades, to dump the mortar tube and still drop infective bomblets on the enemy.

  • nifty! It looks like it has baby bottle nipples on the tip, lol wouldn't 80mm be more effective? Why 60mm?
