This started just recently and I'm pissed, as Toyota considers this normal.
There is more discussion on this here: http://www.rav4world.com/forums/99-4-3-mechanical/85577-mild-engine-knock-uph...

  • I uploaded an update with shortened video with better sound.

  • see video response below

  • The idle sounds fine from far, but when you move closer, you can hear the knock on one of the cylinders. That's not a normal sound under load either. If you don't get results with one dealer, take it to another. Show them these videos. I'm a mechanic and I can hear it audibly when you move the camera in closer. Fight until you get results, don't let them brush you under the carpet because they couldn't be bothered dealing with the issue!

  • @StopDropandLOL

Well, I also called Corporate Toyota and was told it was normal and harmless and no repairs would be authorized. I understand that lots of Toyota owners with his engine have engine noise. This sucks.

  • Which oil filter are you using? Aftermarket or Toyota's Denso Thailand filters?

Japan-made Denso oil filters might solve your problem. The filtering element in these oil filters are different. (Not paper). I have no idea what filter you are using but if it is Thailand-made 90915-YZZF2, try 90915-10003 or 90915-10004.

  • @aakozanoglu

I googled and 90915-YZZF2 is a filter for Corolla or Prius. 1ZZ-FE engine. Hallo!?

  • There's no way that noice is "normal". It's not a rod knock as that would be present at idle. My educated guess is a dull knock under light acceleration would be a main crankshaft bearing with too great a clearance. These are the bearings that hold the crankshaft in the block. Don't expect miracles from any dealer. Just make sure oil pressure is correct with a hot engine.

  • I have a 2007 Camry with the same noise, and I've put 40k miles on it personally without issue, not to mention belting it out on the drag strip every week for a year. I'm very familiar with that noise, I had just assumed it was valve clatter or something. I understand the noise might be alarming, but it doesn't worry me personally, and I've had it looked over by several different mechanics, etc. Hopefully you're just getting all worked up over nothing, but I don't claim to know everything.

  • use premium fuel if u already arent, or try retarding timing, which means ur lowering compression, can also be piston slap from connecting rod bearings going bad. If none of those then I have to say its definitley fuel ur using.

  • If this is normal, why don't these engines make this sound when they are new?

  • The 2GR-FE has a tendency to knock when driven too hard for too long. Another cause would be using high-octane fuel. All in all, the engine sounds common. It has been a problem for Toyota.

  • Please

If you found a solution to this problem tell me

  • I'm from Saudi Arabia

    I have a 2007 toyota Avalon

    Engine 2gr-fe 105,000 miles

I have exactly the same sound

  • @friendlyjacek VVTI/injector ticking noise is common, knocking from the cylinders is not. You definitely have a knock. Don't give up! Kick some ass!

  • Use only 04152-31090 then.
