the song, to me, is about being in a relationship with someone whom you know is not the right one for you, but you're afraid of letting go because you feel that being with him/her is still better than being alone. so the line, "lay me down, I'm lonely" is like a form of surrender, that even if "you don't understand me, and you never even tried to anyway" you still give yourself up for that person. hope that helps. :)
