It's about time I created some Lord of the Rings inspired art! Here is my interpretation of Smaug The Magnificent, the dragon from The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Smaug is proud, arrogant, poised and fierce, I'll continue to work on these themes as the painting progresses. I imagine I'll develop the image into Smaug lounging upon his mound of gold within the depths of the Dwarven stronghold.

Music - 'Panic' and 'Storm' by Benny Hawes

Colour Wheel - Visit CGHUB.com and look in the Tools section.

Double Window - Open your image in Photoshop, then click Window, Arrange, New Window. You will need to drag the windows off the bar and resize them in order to see both at the same time. The Zoom % for each window can be altered individually by using the navigator.

  • I love your work, you are a great artist, just a question. The video's speed, is it 2X or 3X? Thank you :)

  • @JulioLuciano14 It varies, because I adjust the timing of different sections to maintain the flow and keep the video interesting. However generally speaking each video covers three hours of painting.

  • Its brilliant! I do have two things, in terms of lighting it seems the spotlight is very sharp and the shadows are to dark, perhaps that is exactly what you are aiming for but I think some more ambient light would also work, secondly the back leg appear very big if you compare to the front legs, just my 2 cents worth - make no mistake I love it and cannot wait to see the next one - it also makes me wonder what approach Weta digital have taken towards making this in the Hobbit? time will tell.

  • @0CitizenOfTheWorl Yes, I want the back legs to be strong enough to support his entire weight; similar to dinosaurs that could run on two legs if need be. As for the lighting, there probably will be ambient light of some kind added later, once I start painting the surroundings and decide where such a light would be coming from. I'm also eager to see Smaug in the movie, although I imagine he won't appear until part 2 in 2013 :(

  • Excellent. I'm learning so much by watching these. Thanks for the upload!

  • @roargathor Great, I'm pleased you're finding them useful.

  • You have a new subscriber man ... i was casually browsing youtube and now your video inspired me to start with digital art. I was only doing half baked doodles of monsters at school but now im getting a tablet and starting my new spare time hobby. Thanks !

  • Love your style :) May I ask what do you use do draw with in Photoshop? Do you use a Wacom Tablet?

  • Mon Dieu Smaug is awesome. Can't wait to see the next bit.

  • @MikeNashArt Yeah basically there are three types of dragons, the Chinese (snakelike), the D&D (strong forelegs )and the western reptilian type (which I suspect leans towards your dragon), anyhow I hear you - I am also afraid of it wont be until part 2, oh well always nice to have something to look forward to :) I am attempting my very first 3d model, which BTW. is also a dragon :P when its all done I hope you will check it out. :) some preliminary work is already up.. :)
