Having lived here all my life, and driven, cycled, and walked past here,God knows how many times,I was amazed to stumble upon this pristine woodland. They are known as Stanley Bank Woods, and are just off the A580 East Lancs rd behind the "Ship Inn" at Haydock. All this,is approx. 9 miles East of the outskirts of Liverpool, and close to S.t Helens.Anyone visiting here,or Liverpool, will be amazed at the greenery.Yes there is much urbanisation, and industry, but many lovely green areas awaiting discovery. This was a compilation of 3 visits, and was just me experimenting with my homemade "Steadycam",that is actually an alluminuim crutch!!!! When I first visited here in Feb. I came across a bloke birdwatching, and he pointed out,all the smaller birds, that are easily missed. These included - Treecreeper,Nuthatch,Blue tit,Great tit,Fieldfare, amongst the usual,Blackbirds,Robins e.t.c.Also on that first visit,I saw a Woodpecker, and down by the River a Kingfisher.Subsequent return visits, have never matched that first one,for bird life, but the trees are now in leaf, and perhaps they're just not as easily spotted? If the star of the show is the woods, then the co-star is our Sasha, our 12yr old German Shepherd, that we've had since Oct. 1999.She really is a Grand Old Lady, and has been much loved by everybody, and lived with my Parents for 5yrs or so,up until last Autumn, when my Father decided, she was getting to much for him.The plant life in the Woods is rather special too.The carpet of Bluebells, most notable, along with Wild Garlic, and a whole host of flowers, bushes, and trees that I couldn't begin to Identify, save the obvious,Oak,Sycamore e.t.c.and the area is criss-crossed with paths, enabling many walks, cycle rides e.t.c. beats sitting in a pub,or home watching T.V. any day of the week for Me........
The woods were very pretty, when the bluebells were in bloom.
A round trip to Garswood is good but takes near on two hours (less if your dogs pull ypou round)..

@speedingslug Yes I've been told about the Garswood walk.Been to Carr Mill Dam countless times and always assumed the road was a dead end - thats what assuming does for you....Next on the list to explore,Sasha absolutely loves the woods,as I'm sure most dogs do.You can see the enthusiasm in her as soon as one arrives.Friday is 2 for £10 night at the "Waterside" and coincidently results in Sasha getting the leftover fat off the Gammon ha ha. No wonder she likes it down there.........

Bloody hell Frank is there no end to your talents? Here you recreated the Blair Witch project in the woods, what next? I know, you could do Little Red Riding Hood with Sasha as the wolf. Safe to say I'd rather see you on the water than bump into you in the woods...........

@onlywhenpissed Could've done a better Blair Witch now as I have one runny nose indeed........my chest is like a squeeze box at the moment, glad I got that paddling in whilst I could. That branch was shaken on previous visits,When I shake a branch like that Sasha goes at it Guard Dog style,in reality she is as soft and gentle as you could get.I would trust her with a new-born baby. When the kids were younger, they would split up in the woods, and she would be torn between which one to follow........

@liamdanher1992 That branch made my shit turn white!! albeit momentarily ha ha.Didn't know you lived so close,I go down there quite often now, parking the van up the top near the mini-island were you turn for "The Huntsman" I've done the path to Carr Mill loads of times, but never knew about it up until February this year,I usually get on the path at Newton, and pass under the 9 arches and go that way.It is a fabulous path.
