Hillary and Derek experience more friction in their relationship. Vanessa has no luck with Tony. Kelly and Morgan withhold information from Vanessa. Nola and Quint arrive, as do Josh and Helena.
I'm not sure if Sofia Landon Geier (actress who played Diane) wanted to leave or not back in fall 1981. Only thing I know for sure is that it would be only less than a year after that that Landon Geier would start her soap scribe career (never a headwriter, but always helping to write scripts) on "Another World" (later "Days Of Our Lives") and short time after that that she at first tried her hand at acting out in Hollywood (although she'd return to NYC in the early 1990's for a short time) .
Did the actress who played Diane want to leave? Vanessa does seem similar to her around this time. It's strange seeing her manner her, so different from her brattiness a few years later or her grand lady routine for most of the past 20 years. Seeing her flirt with Quint is funny, but of course how was she to know they were related.
It almost looks like Doug Marland was almost trying to write Vanessa as being a replacement for the deceased Diane Ballard at this point, as far as setting people off against each other and using people to further her own agenda. I'm glad that changed after Marland left (but that's about the only thing I'm glad about).
