A couple of girls started doing it as a joke, then it caught on for attention's sake. Soon, all these girls started doing it, and even convinced themselves that they do have it. The most famous mass hysteria case in the U.S. is the Salem witch trials. Girls really claimed to be possessed by witches. We know now that they weren't, right? Again, if I'm wrong, I'll apologize
