המכבים: מרד וגאולה. מבוא.

הצלחת מרד החשמונאים כנגד האימפריה ההלניסטית של סלאוקים היא תחילתה של ממלכה יהודית עצמאית בהנהגת השושלת החשמונאית למשך יותר ממאה שנים. הצלחת המרד וכינון העצמאות באו בעיתוי מוצלח בו הסלאוקים היו נתונים ללחימה בלתי פוסקת כנגד הפרתים במזרח, הרומאים במערב ומרידות נרחבות ברחבי האימפריה. הצלחתו של יהודה המכבי הייתה בין היתר מחוסר יכולתו של אנטיוכוס לשלוח את רב צבאו ליהודה, כאשר מולו עמדו חזיתות כה רבות. המרידות נגד רומא שניסו לקחת דוגמא באו בעיתוי הגרוע ביותר - בו האימפריה הייתה בשיא כוחה, ויכלה לשלוח את רב כוחותיה לדיכוי מרידות מקומיות, גם אם היו בסדרי הגודל האפיים של מרד בר-כוכבא. למרות ההצלחות הרבות במערכה הצבאית, יהודה המכבי נפל בקרב גבורה באל-עשה בשומרון, כאשר נלחם עם שמונה מאות חיילים יהודים בלבד נגד צבא של עשרים ושניים אלף חיילים סלאוקים תחת המצביא בכחידס. מורשתו של יהודה המכבי נמשכה בידי אחיו, שבלחימה עיקשת הצליחו לבסוף להביס לחלוטין את הכוחות הסלאוקים ולשמור על עצמאות הממלכה היהודית המחודשת.

The story of Hasmonean revolt in Judea (167-160BCE) against the hellenistic Seleucid empire is the beginning of a century long independent kingdom of Judea, up to first conquest by Romans in 63BCE and installation of new pro-Roman Herodian dynasty in 37BCE. Despite the heroic victory and historic independence, the epic story of this rebellion was not included in the canonized Jewish literature. The reason for this was the disastrous consequences of revolts against Rome, which were inspired by this previous success of Maccabees struggle against Seleucid empire. Never the less the record of this event survived in two "Books of Maccabees", a "Hasmonean scroll", and also mentioned in Babylonian Talmud and in "Wars of Judea" by Josephus Flavius. Judah Maccabee himself has fallen in the battle of Elasa 161BCE (near modern RamAllah), fighting his last stand with 800 Judean troops against a large 22000 strong army led by Seleucid general Bacchides. Despite his fall Judah's brothers continued the war up to total Seleucid defeat and withdrawal from Judea.

Im proud of all the warriors such as the heroes of David, Ehud the Shoftim and Yehuda haMakabi may peace and blessings be upon them all. May the Almighty make me as brave as them.
