Hello knitters! This video is designed to give you lots of clear and helpful information about the knit cast on. The knit cast on is one of the easiest and fastest cast on methods and is great for new knitters.

  • i keep casting on really really tightly! how do i...well...not?

    xxx

  • You can cast on using needles in a bigger size than you actually need. Also, you could use the German cast on method (I haven't made a video of that, sorry) and cast on over two needles. No chance of that one being too tight!

  • I really wanted to know... what yarn weight is that? Is it medium worsted or bulky yarn?

  • Ravelry lists it as a DK/8ply weight. I usually use 5.0mm - 5.5mm needles with this yarn in these videos.

  • You make it look so easy!!! Im about ready to throw my needles against a Dart Board right about now! I see you are using wooden/bamboo needles.. are they better than the small metal ones? I have no problem using really big needles but im trying to make a baby jumper and I need to use 3.5mm needles. The metal ones are very slippery and Im finding them tough to hold and also my knitting gets really tight so its very difficult to continue. Great video, Its awesome to hear a fellow aussie's voice!

  • I prefer to use bamboo needles because they're not as slippery and so I don't have to worry about stitches falling off the needles so much. Also, I like the feeling of wood in my hands more than metal. But everybody has her own preference, so try out all the options and make your own mind up!

Good luck with the baby jumper, Aussie knitter!

P.S. I really like the idea of knitting needle darts. {-D

  • Thank you so much. I just can't learn with pictures and you did a great job with talking me through it along with the video. Now I can cast on in a knit...and I have to figure out what to do next : ) I can't wrap a baby in a cast on : )

  • Wow, this is fantastic. I just started learning to knit and this method of casting on is about 100 times easier than what I was doing. Maybe someday I'll actually be able to make something!

  • I have to come back to review your cast on - Although it's far more quick than my usual way of casting on -I cast on in the cable cast method as one of your videos?? - The cast on stitches produced are very loopy and loose even when CO'd on smaller needles. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Thank you, this is great. :) I was taught to cast on in a completely different way (pulling the yarn from between two stitches) but this is so much more fluid.

I have a great deal of trouble with uneven tension though - lots of COs that are either too tight or loose so the gaps between each stitch. Do you have any advice to keep it even? :)

  • Thx soooo much!!! I haven't knitted in forever and I wanted to start again. This was so helpful!!! Thx again!

  • hi this is the only video that showed me how to cast on but the only problem is that i am trying ot knit my mum a scarf and i wanna use really sorta thick wool and it doesnt look right and its not like sitting right !

    thanks

  • Hi! I'm just starting to learn to knit and find your videos to be the best and clearest I've seen. I just have one question...when knitting/casting on, does it matter which side the ball is on and which side the loose end is on? I don't want to run out of yarn or get tangled up or run into any other problem.

  • thanks a lot, this was really helpful. (:

  • Thank you for the clear instruction, it's really helpful to me. I have a pattern which calls for additional stitches to be cast on after the first row - "Row 2: Cast on 5 sts, beg by working over cast on sts, k1, p1, *k2, p2; rep from *" . How do I cast on for Row 2? Thank you.

  • This video was so helpful. I just learned how to knit today and by the time I was done practicing and going to move on, I had forgotten how to cast on :) I watched several videos, but this one made it clear to me and I was able to get started in just a few minutes. Thank you!
