Moldova emerged as an independent republic after the collapse of the USSR in 1991. Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, it is one of Europe's poorest countries. Moldova is heavily dependent on Russia for energy supplies, while a Russian embargo on Moldovan wines has seriously effected the economy. A major problem is Transnistria, mainly inhabited by ethnic Russians and Ukrainians, which declared independence from Moldova in 1990. In the early 1990s about 1,500 people died in the fighting that followed and last year the region held an independence referendum. President Vladimir Voronin has focused on the Transnistria issue and on European integration.

  • Moldova is 90% made of ethmic Romanians called 'Moldovans' (as in the Americans from Texas being called 'Texans'). But Voronin is a Russian citizen, a KGB agent, who's a fraud. Transnistria's PREDOMINANT ethnic group is still Moldovan/Romanian,except that the Russians have an occupation army over there. Eminescu, Moldova's 'national' poet said two things: "We (Moldovans) are Romanians and period"; and "to mention the name Moldova is to rise against Russian imperialism".

  • Exista o vorba la romani : De ce ti-e frica nu scapi...

  • This is one of the most embarassing things I've ever seen on Euronews. You get to make an interview with a communist president who harasses mass-media and HR activists, and you question none of his deeds, letting Voronin get away with it. A spineless interview made by a spineless journalist for a spineless channel.

    Shame on you, Euronews.

  • Basarabia is romanian land, but the soviets have taken it from us. Now that Voronin soviet bastard leads this land under a communist regime. The romanians, who form the majority of the population, were brainwashed in to think that there is no romanian language, but there is the moldovian language, which is the same with the romanian. The romanians living there have almost no rights. I adress this message to the international community, so you know the big injustice that has been made.

  • he is toyng with you !! comunist criminal
