Charlie is not just a sax player. He is a Jazz player. He is Jazz. One of great music style he made up that we many jazz players still admire and follow him. Because it's cool. I hope that I will be able to get his soul jazz a little and create mine in my sax play. A dream.
The way I heard it was that Bird was in a car driving to a gig when they hit a chicken (known as a yardbird in southern slang) he told the driver to stop and he went back and got the chicken and later cooked it. They started calling him Yardbird after that and it was later shortened to Bird.
Could well be From THE ROYAL ROOST BROADCASTS recorded live in 1949 with Kenny Dorham tpt = It is him for sure ; Milt Jackson vib ; Al Haig piano ; Tommy Potter bass and Max Roach dms . All broadcasts were reissued on 3 SAVOY Lps in 1985 . I do have them .
My guess' R: Diz or Kenny Durham tpt. c Dec. 45-46.Milt Jackson v. Al Haig or Stan Levy p. with Ray Brown b. Kenny Clark or Roy Porter? d.Possibly one of tose Jubilee radio air checks?

That doesn't sound like Max roach on drums. Kenny Clark? Maybe. Perhaps, Buzz "does" Freeman. As to trumpet, not Dizzy for sure.
