In the 80s, if you wanted to get an upgrade for a program you used, you could either wait 6 weeks for it to come in the mail or get if from CompuServe. Between that and e-mail, compuserve was something most offices subscribed to.

@dan1986ist but, i've never seen this commercial until now. i would have been floored in '87 if i'd found out things like that were possible. for about five minutes, then gone back to playing with my transformers and gi joes.

@dan1986ist familiar with early to mid-90s internet-ish elements, for instance I used to dick around with bulletin board systems, slowly downloading like 10-20 porn pics. in an hour or so, LOL. around 96-97 i finally had real internet access when i entered college but also found a couple telnet based chat rooms to hang out in (not MUDs, but with some similar elements just for fun, it *was* just text, after all). however i've never actually used a news group, those were big in the 80s & early 90s

@kranktank bbs and dial-up services were common in the 80s and early 90s. the world wide web we use today didn't take off until NCSA Mosaic was released.
