perhaps it's a "there is no try, there is only do" type of thing, but how would you compare the weight of one of these stage balls to an acrylic (76mm/3") ball?

No, there was a lot lot lot of trying. Stage balls are not as heavy as even a small acrylic like that. I can do the thumb balance with such a ball, but it hurts my hand a lot more, and there would not be so much practise with one of them.
