Cherries Journey
Our journey had advanced;
Our feet were almost come
To that odd fork in Being's road,
Eternity by term. --- Emily Dickinson
Cherrie T. Ramos led a meaningful life in the best way she could. Short of 36 years, but, it was a life well spent serving and caring for her loved ones, friends and God.
To friends and acquaintances, she was Cherrie and fondly called Edi by our family. She was born on June 20, 1973. Some of her siblings called her Mickey Mouse because she had ugly teeth when she was a little girl.
That joyful face of hers lingers among those who knew the girl that grew up paying attention to her studies, work and gives utmost importance to being tidy and clean.
Cherrie was a woman full of life and happiness even as she struggled with her health since her childhood.
Cherrie was notably sickly when she was still a baby. She would at times faint and complain of abdominal pains. Nevertheless, she grew up a normal child, playing with other kids and attended to her kindergarten, elementary and high school studies at Notre Dame of Glan.
After finishing her AB course at Notre Dame of Dadiangas College, Cherrie worked with the Sarangani provincial government, where she later met her first ever boyfriend who eventually became her husband thats me! We tied the knot in January 31, 1998.
Yet, a couple of years before we got married, Cherrie was rushed to Cebu City where she underwent a 12-hour surgery procedure at the Sacred Heart Hospital. Her case (choledochal cyst) was studied by the interns and the doctors because it was rare. I was there.
On October 17, 2008, Cherrie suffered from severe pain in her abdomen and since then she had a series of admissions in various hospitals in General Santos, Davao, and Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu.
She was then found to be suffering from cancer - Cholangio carcinoma or bile duct cancer.
Her illness brought us closer and stronger to our faith. As devote Catholic, we had been spending time for our panaad with the Sto Nino, paying homage each year to the patron saint of Cebu, even as she was already battling cancer.
Cherries battle with the big C ended on that warm afternoon of June 4, 2009 just as the electricity also snapped momentarily in General Santos City, where she was confined in a hospital under life support system.
In her final moments, hope, courage and determination was all over the woman who had that penchant for anything that is pink and clean, which represents the truly feminine in her.
Cherrie faced death with dignity and that Filipino trait of never-surrender attitude and a deep faith to the Lord.
Cherrie will be remembered for the many people, whose lives she touched and inspired with even the little things she did.
With Cherries passing, many would realize how short life is and how unfair it can be, but she lived long enough to attain some personal goals. A hard worker, Cherrie helped me put up a decent and ideal life. She had lots of dreams for us.
We had planned for her usual birthday treat of lechon (roast pig) to go with a salo-salo for family and friends on June 20, 2009, her 36th.
The celebrations pushed through with all the trimmings and the food that Cherrie would love to have. But, she wasnt there anymore, physically at least.
Aside from me, Cherrie is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Godofredo Tampus Sr., and siblings Rosie, Gina, Bebot, Susan, Janet, Laklak, Jun-jun & Raing. And twins Joshua and Jacob.
Cherrie was laid to rest at the family lot in barangay Tango, Glan, Sarangani at high noon on Friday, June 12, 2009.
