Alopecia: Losing Hair
People say in this world the only permanent thing is change. Change is something that should be expected but somehow there is no way to prepare for it. A person goes through some changes, whether it is drastic or progressive, it is inevitable. Some happen later in a persons life but some happens early on. Some changes are physical and some others are emotional. And when it does, it surprises not only the person undergoing the change but also the people around him/ her. There are cases wherein a physical change can have a deeper impact in someone. One instance is alopecia or loss of hair.
Hair grows and falls in three cycles. First is the growing cycle. Second, the hair goes through an apoptotic phase then in a resting phase. Finally, hair starts to fall until it grows back again. The hair follicle is the one responsible for hair growth and the cycle goes continuously. The normal rate of hair fall is 100 scalp hairs a day however if the rate goes higher, that should be a cause for alarm. There are different causes of alopecia and the most common are the following:
Androgenetic which is androgen-dependent and often, hereditary. Also known as male-pattern or female-pattern hair loss.
Drugs that are usually administered to cancer patients during a chemotherapy session.
Infection that may occur specifically in the scalp.
Systemic diseases that are usually causes abnormally high fever. Others are systemic lupus and some are nutritional deficiencies, still others could be endocrine disorders.
Other less popular causes are:
Autoimmune disease which causes immune responses to become overactive and attack the hair follicles that causes hair fall without hair growing back up.
Heavy metal poisoning
Dermatologic conditions
There are different types of tests that healthcare professionals conduct in examining patients that experience too much hair fall:
1.The pull test where a number of hairs, usually 40-60, is being pulled out. It is conducted at least in three different areas. The hair that was pulled out is then examined under a microscope.
2.The pluck test where individual hair is pulled out from the roots. The roots of the pulled out hair is then further examined to determine the cause of hair loss.
3.Scalp biopsy is conducted for patients when the condition persists or when the other tests yield insufficient results. The specimens are taken from the affected areas.
4.Daily hair counts which can be performed by a patient himself/ herself to count the number of hair loss. Hair usually falls during combing and washing. The patint then collects the hairs that have fallen out then counts and collects them in a clear plastic bag. This should be performed in 14 days. The collected hair will then be brought to a physician for further examination.
There are a number of drugs and treatments available for alopecia patients. It is best to consult a health care professional before deciding which drug to take or treatment to go through.
