A snippet from the highly successful world premier of Latitude 33 in June 2010.
Latitude 33 is a theatrical performance utilising the latest multi-media technologies, weaving a tale as old as Time, yet as modern as the collective dreamings of our global Future. It is a celebration of place - an elegy to the indomitable spirit of humanity - to the beauty of human achievement and to the diversity of our cultures - it is a song to all that unites us in the face of so much that has, and might yet, divide us and oppress.
Composer and creator Yantra de Vilder sits at her grand piano, accompanying her exciting soundtrack featuring performances from a diversity of musicians from Australia, Chile and South Africa. This is her award-winning speciality - Yantra is renowned for her ability to fuse contemporary sensibilities with "world" sounds, to create a new music, bridging time and cultures, evoking rich inner landscapes that speak as much of heritage, as they do of hope.
Around her, dancers who have worked with Bangarra Dance Theatre, Legs on The Wall and The Australian Ballet express their exquisite craft; visual producer Andrew Worboys creates state of the art computer generated images and combines this with footage from Emmy and Gold award winning cinematographers David Hannon and David Warth to create a spectacular screen experience; and perhaps the best-known voice in Australian media, Richard Morecroft, delivers a narrative softly linking a tale of the dignity of the human soul researched and written by local playwright Pauline Wright.
An homage to the art of stage-craft, Latitude 33 will appeal to lovers of music, dance, theatre, film, photography, cultural diversity and the beauty of the soaring human spirit. All supporting the stories of the cultures laying across Latitude 33 since time began.
Yet, here and now, on Latitude 33, those original cultures have survived, the ancient songs are still sung, the dances remembered; travellers have added new forms to the melting pot of art and culture and new songs and dances evolve across the new networks of technology.
