What a beautiful song and tribute to mom. Very, very moving. Thanks to your video, I'm going to stop and give my mom a big hug this afternoon. I am one of the ones blessed to still have mom around at 85 years young. Thanks for a lovely clip and God bless you! Mike FIVE STARS!

Beautiful. What a pretty song. That lady reminds me of my own mom. Wouldnt we all like for our moms to come back for a night? Thanks

This sounds a lot like the 1862 G.F. ROOT version. Several scores were written to this poem - I have several of them in my collection. Hoping to play one on You Tube here, as this is such a lovely old song it's a shame it's so obscure.

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote this song into one of her books, performed by a neighbor at a church social. She talked about being choked up by it then. It has worn well. It chokes me up now.

this song reminds me of my mom, who died of cancer when i was nine years old...whenever I feel particularly tired or jaded, I play this song and fall asleep to it...this and lullaby for a stormy night. Its beautiful. Thank you for posting.

ilgizzard, thank you for the forensic data on this piece. Thought you might like to know that the name Florence Percy was an alias for the incomparable Elizabeth Akers Allen. This is how she is best known by scholars and commoners alike.

sang this is select chorus before my grandmother died</3 - tear -

Soul heartening and hauntingly gorgeous, the voice for this piece is that of Cathie Ryan, the popular Celtic singer, and the words were penned by Florence Percy in 1860.
The melody was composed in (date unknown) by John Hill Hewitt, 1801-1890
Also, set to music in 1861, by George Frederick Root, 1820-1895.
I am not sure which musical arrangement this version is in; but, to me, it is a more than beautiful composition.

This is beyond beautiful.
Thank you for your comment. These pictures were taken from 1952 to 1964 in Illinois and Missouri where I grew up. My mother's maiden name was Massey, perhaps we are related.
