With Peugeot dominating the 1985 World Rally Championship with the first of the mid engined 4WD space frame kevlar paneled Group B supercars, the rest on the 85 1000 Lakes, including the 500hp+ Audi sport quattro S1 and the 400hp mid-engined RWD supercharged Lancia 037 were underdogs. Yet with Scandinavian honor at stake on the ultra high speed Finnish roads this was the best rally of the season. A true Group B classic.

The Audi works team kept going in group A for a while but only events like the Safari. Private teams have been in the WRC up until till recently (Rudi Stahl)but mostly in gp N. While they always had 4WD cars in their line up they didn't have any 'homoligation specials' so anything they entered was usually overweight and uncompetitive. They took the GpB technology to IMSA sports car racing and later Le mans.

This coverage kicks the shit out of anything my generation got. We had lots of computer graphics representing what it would kind of look like if two cars were racing at the same time, bugger all actuall footage and some moron commentator who'd comeo ut with gold like,

'he's going faster than a sheep out of a sheep shearing factory'.

And the cars weren't as fast...

i hate the way FIA killed gr b and ihate the reason they killed it for,now WRC cars doing faster times in rallys no problem , i can not understand FIA !just today i was in the rally stages there was 206 s2000 car it was faster than gr n 12-14 cars!!!
