This happened all the way back to Anarchy Online beta (and provably well before). There was a point where the words being typed by the developers were so ridiculed that this became a clarion call.
You won't find a company that deleted their message boards more often than.... Funcom.
It turned from an outlet of rage to a snap response that no longer holds any meaning. Mostly due to the fact that people recognize that no matter what marketing might say, developers make games for themselves.
