Jesus is the God of the OT. The punishment for breaking the law was death, when living "under the law." Now we are living in the age of grace, repentance and forgiveness. This period of "living under the law" had to be afforded man, to prove that we are sinful beings in need of a Savior and we need to be transformed through Christ.
That story is what first attacted me to call myself a Christian. But guess what. Today Christianity has been overwhelmed by fundamentalists who do not believe in the mercy and forgiveness Jesus shown to this woman. Today Christians "take back" that whole story, and claim that it was a mistake and should have never been in the Bible at all.
"The earliest and most reliable manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53-8:11." -NIV bible
@AmosTheTalented It is literal and it also has a significance for all times. God spoke in parables written with the lives of the people of the Old Testament. If the Jews (the chosen people) were delivered from slavery, we, the chosen ppl of God (Christians) are also delivered but from the slavery of sin. The life of Abraham, Father of our Faith, and the sacrifice of his only one son Isaac), Moses (saw God face to face, known as the "savior", Joseph (sold for 30), they all prefigure Jesus, poetry!
@Sjarke98 Jesus said that in the OT that God allowed them to do many things that are NOT right, not because God approved of their actions but because of the hardness of their hearts. After Original Sin entered the world, mankind became like beasts driven by their evil passions and desires, and not having the life of grace, they could not raise themselves to the level of sanctity for which God had created them. After Jesus's death & the Holy Spirit came, it is when we can strive for sanctity.
@AmosTheTalented how long do you think God shld allow us to live in sin? Should he go ahead and kill us as soon as we commit a mortal sin and are enslaved by it? That's what the story of the slavery of Egypt means. It is not to be taken literally. It means slavery to sin. After God delivered them and they were in the desert, they longed to return to Egypt (sin) that's human nature for you! The prodigal son wished to eat the same food of the pigs after he had squandered his father's fortune: LIFE
Jesus made clear that he was/is God (OT/NT) when he said, I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE AND THE SAME!. In the OT God is angry at his creation, but in the NT God is reconciled to man because of what Jesus came to do. The letter of the law in the OT gives way to the heart of the law in the NT. Those that wanted to stone the woman were as sinful as she was and Jesus knew this. He points out their sin and shows them to be nothing but hypocrites.

@NONAROSSA If that event among others in the bible are not to be taken literally, then do you (as I do) propose that they never took place?

Good thing that there weren't any engineers around. They would have just built a machine (which is obviously without sin) to cast the first stone.
