cant remember pat getting anything like the criticism that grev starkey took for a similar ride on dancing brave.BEST HORSE WAS SECOND. sorry Pat, great fan of yours but this was not your best !!.
well when a horse with a name like "Benny The Dip" can win the epsom derby, ANY NAMED horse can win. What a terrible name for a good horse that wins a top group 1 - on closer inspection of The dip's Ped. he had very good blood.
I was working for Racetech doing the photofinish this day. I had been doing the job for 14 years and had never done an Epsom Derby. Didn't see much of the race except for the last 100yds from the camera apertures, but it was bloody exciting. It was still film then instead of computers, so had to develop the negative, but remember being slightly nervous. I still have the photofinish print and got willie Ryan to sign it a few days later at another track. The only other Derby I did was Oath in 1999
Agreed Robin...I was there at low level on the lawn near the winning post and the noise of the crowd was deafening. I knew at the time it was a speacial moment and so it has proved. Not the highest rated winner but a spectacular finish.
One of the great finishes within my memory. Maybe not one of the greatest Derby winners, but one of the most thrilling Derbys - must be said that Silver Patriarch got the better out of it, winning the St Leger and Coronation Cup, whereas Benny the Dip, like so many, never seemed the same horse again.
what a sight to see the winner so far clear 3 out.. this was easily the best derby from the late 90's between lammtarra and sinndar, this was the best derby
big difference from then till now

Pat Eddery was a great jockey but he got this one BADLY wrong. Gave Silver Patriarch an impossible task.
