Hi Davy , I've seen a portrait artist use fixative 3 times during the construction of a portrait ? Is this common practice in the place du tertre , or are there known problems with this practice, other than getting a breath full

Fixative can be used between separate 'layers' of full colour pastel. This restores to the surface some 'tooth',so that the drawing can be re-worked.Some impasto-like effects can be achieved like this. The majority of artists at the sq only use fix (once)at the end,to protect colour work.crystal paper(v.fine almost like grease-proof) is then used to protect the surface until framed.
