I think its more for the crowds safety than the soldiers. Imagine some chav cunt thought it would be a laugh to flip them off, these guys have been trained to kill and have seen action overseas.
Because the police are there they can sort him out, arrest him or whatnot. If the police werent there, youd have a bunch of angry trained soldiers ready to kick the shit out of the guy (rightly so :P )
