Yesterday, Thursday 6th August 2009, saw the re-opening of the town's old Woolworths shop bringing hope to more and more empty retail outlets in the New Forest.

CEO and Founder of 99p Stores Limited, Nadir Lalani, oversaw the launch of his 96th branch in the UK. He was joined by Chairman, Peter Gent, and representatives of the Rotary Club of Lymington.

The shop will be helping to raise funds for the local club and also gave members the opportunity to "shop" for donated products that local charities and good causes would find useful.

President of Lymington Chamber of Commerce, Jenny Welker, also attended the launch and was "quite optimistic" about the new store and how it might bring more shoppers into the town.

Local resident and VIP guest, 10-year-old Sophie Ellis, was asked to perform a 99-second trolley dash and open the store by helping to cut the ribbon at the entrance.

Sophie managed to collect sixty-nine items during her race around the store. She bagged over £60 worth of goods from the shelves.

  • Ah funny I should find this video. I walked past this shop last Friday {21-5-2010} and wondered if it was an old Woolworths store. The old Woolworths in Twickenham is now also a 99p store. The funny thing is that there was alot of local opposition to it as people thought it would look bad in what is a rather more affluent area compared to neighbouring towns...On the opening day there was a queue outside. Snobbery is a funny thing...But I suppose we are all falling on harder times.

  • its gonna be a huge 99p store in this old woolworths shop
