doesn't characters who follow miracle workers around and believe less and less and have to be reminded constantly they are in the presence of the 'messiah' lend itself to good narrative, to make the audience realize that each new miracle was that much more spectacular?

I have read that spankings prevent a child from developing into an adult who uses vulgarity in public fora and who makes ad hominem arguments. I don't know how much empirical evidence there is for it, but it worked on me.
