Breathing should first be taught only after a child can perform catch-up freestyle. It is vital that the teacher understands the difference between 'rolling' the head to breath and 'lifting'. Lifting the head will destroy good catch-up and cause the swimmers lower half to sink and lose momentum.

  • keep one goggle lens in the water as you roll to air.

engage core muscles and lower back to elevate heavy pelvic region.

  • That's what I always tell me kids "eyes down!!!" as soon as they look forward their legs sink, then their kicks are not as efficient, and there fore less forward movement and no lift. Without good lift no support for the extended arm, and then its all over. They stop and grasp for air. :(

  • Really useful how to teach kids, love the under water video. THANKS!
