To be fair, of the 3 main contrasting moods (martial, lyrical and capricious) he delivered the lyrical best. But to be a great soloist you must be accomplished on all counts! The martial here is too languid and the capricious not cheeky enough. Maybe he needs a smaller viola, with perhaps a Tertis design to give him the edge over the "bulkiness" of a viola. A smaller viola would give him stronger access to those high positions, & iron out some shaky intonations especially with the 4th finger.
класс! НЕК рулит!! в России он не так известен конечно... но почитателем его я стал уже очень давно. я слушаю тяжеляк сам, но поклонникам настоящей музыки, прошу отписаться. я ведь не один...да??.. ведь!!??
A lot of people bash Vengerov's Walton especially regarding the slow interpretation of the first movement... but honestly, after listening to several other recordings, Vengerov's stands triumphant :D
wtf...... i dont like this version at all.... no offense but like this is my favorite viola concerto of all times.... and i hear the music interpretation is all wrong... in the most beautiful parts were just cut offfff way tooo early!!!! tht bothered me the most!!!!!
My favourite version by far is the Nigel Kennedy version with andre previn. This version is excruciating. No dynamics, too much vibrato and often horribly out of tune.

I imagine the viola is just too big for the guy, or he really can not play. But first a`d like to advice a smaller viola.
