Those are called "lenticular clouds" They're caused when the air flow is just right so when it flows over Mt. Rainier, the air gets pushed upward where it cools and condenses into clouds. Depending on how smooth the flow is, you can get some amazing clouds formations as we've seen so far today. Here is more information on what causes them from an earlier blog entry.
It's usually a sign of rain within 24 hours because typically the moist flow that precedes a storm around here is the perfect set up for these clouds.

@nostalgiamelancolia Thanks so much! fascinating photos indeed! I grew up in Tacoma, so, until I moved away, I never realized how majestic Ranier stood in my back yard each day. Im thankful that I experienced that!

The beauty of Washington state is undescribable.I lived there for 5 years,and I'm planning to move back because I can't find another state as beautiful as WA.Kitsap county is absolutely gorgeous especially Poulsbo,Bainbridge Island and Gig Harbor.Kingston is also beautiful.miss Washington so badly I can't wait to go back.
