As When the Dove from Acis and Galatea was composed in 1719 by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Acis and Galatea is often considered a pastoral opera because of the classical mythological subject matter and lyrical quality to the music. Handel is especially famous for his many operas, oratorios, and larger scale instrumental concertos.
As When the Dove
From Acis and Galatea
(Recitative)
Oh! Didst thou know the pains of absent love,
Acis would neer from Galatea rove.
(Aria)
As when the dove laments her love,
All on the naked spray;
When he returns, no more she mourns,
But loves the livelong day.
Billing, cooing,
Panting, wooing,
Melting murmurs fill the grove,
Melting murmurs, lasting love.
