The so-called 'Act of Free Choice' was a sham referendum held in 1969 to decide whether Indonesia should govern West Papua. The small sample of indigenous West Papuans selected to vote were threatened with physical atrocities if they voted against the Indonesians. Of course they all voted unanimously for Indonesia. To this day, on the basis of this farce (sanctioned, incidentally, by the UN), Indonesia holds West Papua under military rule.

This short film by the late Mark Worth (1958-2004) is a precursor to his outstanding documentary "Land of the Morning Star" and succinctly outlines the political history of West Papua to date.

"Act of Free Choice" is the title of David Bridie's debut solo album, and although the song "Act of Free Choice" was played live at David's shows it was omitted from the album for "textural" reasons (in other words, it didn't fit in with the other tracks). It later appeared on the 5-track "Act of Free Choice" EP.

Irian Jaya was officially renamed WEST PAPUA in February 2007. Indonesia instigated this name change.

Check the facts. The western half of the island is called West Papua. Please don't talk about the local indigenous population "choosing" to join Indonesia. The Act of Free Choice was an act of force and violence, there was no freedom about it. Your comments about "inferior races" say it all about extremist Indonesian attitudes!

Indonesia is run feudally, i.e. all the rulers are close blood relations. It's a faux democracy. You keep mentioning Australia's British criminal history as if that somehow exonerates Indonesia from its criminal *present* in Papua. No one is saying the British belonged in Australia, but at least Australia has taken steps to make amends. You on the other hand seem to believe Indonesia has some sort of god-given, ethical, racial or cultural right in Papua... it has no right to be there whatsoever.

The West papuan history has been secret for almost 50 years now.However, in 2006 the arrival of 43 West Papuan refugees into Australia has proved a very effective way of attracting International attention to the course of Papuan Independence. "The West Papuan needs their own Aspirations". Only *FREEDOM* in peace could release the people of West Papua because they have been thru all the sufferings u can think about.
