Not only was Bobby Jones one of the most brilliant defenders ever to wear an NBA uniform, but he was also one of the most virtuous. While most other players depended on the occasional thrown elbow, hip-check, or grab of the uniform to gain an advantage, Jones relied on pure hustle and determination to keep his man at bay.

It was Jones's stellar defensive play, along with his other specialties, that made him a standout sixth man. His only peer during the 1980s was the Boston Celtics' Kevin McHale. Opposing teams could ill afford to relax on defense when Jones came off the bench, and they also had to work a lot harder on offense to get the ball in or even near the basket.

  • was he or was he not one of Doc's all time favorite team mates? 6'9'" long arms played D had hops. He along with a long list of NBA players is under appreciated. This is where I think the elite should step up and tell what other great players they teamed up with. It would take the NBA history to another level and also give credit where credit is due. We know the best ever but there are many more great players that never get talked about by the guys they helped make great. SAD

  • Proud to say he's my coach! :)

  • Bobby Jones NBA stats field goal percentage-55%. Turnover to assist ratio-1.5:1, blocks-982. FT%-78. Seasons with 1,000+ points-3. NBA starts-123

There are guys playing in the NBA that would give their "left one" to do these kind of numbers that are STARTERS today! The NBA SUCKS now in my opinion but that's because I grew up watching players like Bobby Jones. Everything he did on the court has BASKETBALL SMARTS written all over it! It was CERTAINLY a different era...

  • @Afroman015 you're right, my mistake.

  • @Andreas748 ...um, Bobby Jones didn't make the 1983 All-Star Game. THREE of the five starters were from Philly (Julius, Mo Cheeks & Moses) and Andrew Toney was on the bench. Jones did make the All-Star Game in '82 but that year Julius was the only other player from the Sixers in the game and the only starter.
