This is actually the original Exorcist. It was filmed 3 years before the much more famous William Friedkin version which was based on Abby,but it was never released due to contractual disputes with the actors. When the Friedkin version was released in 1973 the makers of Abby sued ,but it was settled out of court. Abby finally saw a official release after four years on the shelf. Capitalizing on the success of 'The Exorcist'...... ; )

I was there in Louisville, KY (where the film was shot) at the world premiere. It was a Midnight screening and as I remember it, all cast and crew were present ( absent was William Marshall, the only reason I went was to get his autograph as I had all my Blacula stuff with me!) Audience present was very somber as mostly this was there product.
