@ohsteacher Well this is a year late responding, but my horn teacher told me that it's mostly opinion. He likes to end on a more open tone than stopped horn allows. I have to say your stopped ending was excellent, but at least for my level of skill I think it'd be easier to taper off while playing open.

This was my high School Solo for my senior year, made a superior rating on it.
I still have the music with notes written all over it. :}

When it went down to that low Ab it was lovely. I've only ever heard it splatty, so it was nice to hear some control in that range.

Last year I looked at your rondo and romance Mozart movements for help in solo and ensembles. It really helped me a lot and I went to state as a freshman. :) I love all of your videos, but I was wondering if you could play Hindemith. I will not be playing it this year, but maybe some other time. You are great! :)

If you take requests you should try recording the Hayden concerto #2 in D 1st movement. One of my favorites.

I wonder if you are familiar with the french horn obligato parts for the LDS hymn "Oh My Father" Crawford Gates arrangement (2nd and 4th verse) and if so, would you post it with the midi accompaniment? I have always wanted to play that and to hear it without the choir.

Personally, I think the horn sounds great. (Maybe even better than the Kuhn...)
Wait?! You ditched your Ricco Kuhn for a Holton?? Kuhn's are highest quality custom-made, right?
I own a Holton Farkas H179, and I honestly have to say that it's a piece of junk compared to an Alexander 103 that I tried after a horn masterclass.
I'm just very curious to why you would pick a horn used by mostly students over a Knopf-style custom horn used by many professionals.
You are an amazing player, so I guess it doesn't matter thaaat much, but still kinda shocking to me.

@shib340 I played this horn while I was between horns. The Ricco Kuhn had a great sound but I never felt comfortable on it and it got water in places that were hard to empty, so I sold it. The Holton 378 in this video turned out to be a great horn. I have now purchased a 10 year old Holton 276 Merker. It is a duel bore, hand made horn that plays incredibly well. When I get a chance, I will post some Youtube videos using it.

Gorgeous. What horn were you playing for this recording?
beforhorn 11 months ago
@beforhorn I played this on a "student model" Holton 378. It plays wonderfully, as do most Holtons. I now own a Holton 276 - the Merker model. It is perhaps the best horn I have ever played on, and I have played on all of the best ones over the years.

This is the first time I've heard this piece played where it didn't end with the e-flat played open. Are there different editions where it doesn't go from stopped to open at the end?
abbellimenti 1 year ago
@abbellimenti The Mason Jones edition indicates to stop the entire last 6 measures. Some of the pieces in the book say "Arranged by M. J." but this one doesn't. Still, it is possible that he changed the ending. This is the only version I have ever seen or played. Does anyone else have any more info?
