He is a genius.. since he struck to south indian films largely, he never got d attention from rest of india and infact he wasn't atall considered to be given a CIVILIAN award from Govt of India even after he prevails to be THE FIRST INDIAN COMPOSER TO SCORE A "SYMPHONY" !!!

அனேகமான பாட்டுக்களில் சந்தத்துக்கு ஜால்ரா போட்டபடி அதனுடன் கூடவே பின்னணி இசை பயணிக்கும் ஆனால் இந்தப்பாட்டின் ஆரம்ப இசையிலேயே மூன்று நான்கு வாத்தியங்கள் வெவ்வேறு இசை ராஜாங்கங்களைச் செய்கின்றன. பின்பு அவை எல்லாம் ஒன்றாகி ரிதத்துடன் போகின்றன. ஆனால் தங்களின் ஆரம்பத் தனித்தன்மையில் மாற்றமில்லாமல் போகின்றன. இருந்த போதிலும் அவை நான்கையும் ஒன்றாக கேட்கும் போது வேற்றுமையில் ஒற்றுமையாக ஒரு இனிய இசை அனுபவத்தைக் கொடுக்கின்றன..

in fact, i'd even add that the so-called indian awards of padma bhushan, vibhushan, shri and whatever samskritam the north can think of, is just b*llsh*t which the rest of india (north excluded) don't even desire, let alone need.

i've listened to some fine music from the north-eastern states of assam, meghalaya, nagaland, manipur, mizoram and arunachal pradesh. a native of meghalaya once told me this: we compose and sing for our hearts' satisfaction, not for 'north indian' falsifications.

how does it matter? being tamizhans, we all know that the north indian bread is running on copycat'ing. they listen to what it seems to them can earn them fame and money, concoct it to suit their perception and churn out a readymade tune thinking someone somewhere will get it.

i've no regard whatsoever for north indians. being a tamizhan myself who just knows tamizh upto grade 3, i'm still in awe of this great composer! ilayaraja is the breath of tamizh music.
