Harry Truman was a caretaker of a lodge at Mt. St. Helens. Having been there nearly his entire life, he refused to leave and was killed when the mountain erupted on May 18, 1980, his lodge buried under 300 feet of water, ash and mud, no trace of it left behind. The ridge nearby was later named in his honor. This special was aired on KOIN TV (CBS) ten years after the eruption.

  • But don't you think it was his destiny to stay, especially at that age? His life was that mountain and that lodge.

Doesn't it make more sense that he died there, than 3-5 years later in a nursing home somewhere, left with only the memory of his home and life wiped away by the mountain?

  • I can identify with Harry Truman's position. You're 84 years old, the lodge has been your whole life, your wife is dead and buried there. He left this world on his own terms, and not too many people get to do that.

  • Some would say, "What a stupid old man to stay up there knowing the mountain was going to go." Well, if ever those who would say that find themselves faced with that decision then we'll see what they decide to do won't we. The man was in the fall of his life at 80 some years old, his wife was gone, noting left to live for but the only life he had ever known. Even if he had left and escaped the blast he would have been as good as dead after that day. RIP Harry Truman, I admire your courage.

  • @echarvalkeem I had solidified this guys attitude at 23. I got to see my grandmother die of cancer, and my grandfather go through a nursing home, and dealing with doctors and staff. I would rather die in the woods. I'd rather die than be someone's bitch, and kiss ass for beans. A lot of people want to believe everyone just blows with the wind, too. It was like Apollo in Rocky IV, "Maybe you don't know what I'm talking about now, but believe me you will when it's over."

  • @GooglFascists wow do i detect some hostility towards this old bloke....moot point really, he died when the mountain exploded

  • @4freespeech he used it once in the video (obviously more in his life time). Who hasn't used Gods name in vain. God forgives all of us. Purgatory will have been good to Harry R. Truman. I dont know weather he was religious but he may have been praying the moments before, asking God for forgiveness. I do believe God forgives all of us aslong as we ask for it.

  • @sw3210 "Harry died where he belonged"? Pissing and crapping his pants trying

to scream with a mouthful of hot mud? The man was a coward; a misanthrope

who hated people so much he hid out in the woods for 50 years. Harry Truman

is nobody to admire as a "hero". In the end he made himself the biggest FOOL

in Washington state. Harry also cursed Mt. Saint Helens, the place he claimed

was "part of him". Now he's a tiny turd in a monstrous compost pile- that's all.

  • @littledudemark5 4freespeech didn't bring God into this- Harry did! We know

God "is angry at the wicked every day" and those who take His name in vain

"will not be held guiltless" and have no right to expect us to "shut up". God loved

mankind enough to send His Son to die for our sins. There is nothing more He

could do to save us, so if we choose to curse Him we seal our own doom.

Just like a loving Father, God punishes those of His children who disobey,

whether you like it or not.

  • nice old guy. he died where he belonged

  • @CyclingVault true, and if he would have left no one would be talking about him today

  • @CyclingVault true, and if he would have left no one would be talking about him today

  • That poor soul's spirit doesn't live on in me...

cursing God like that all the time while living

with death & eternity a moment away.

I think Truman was terrified in the last few

seconds of his life when he realized he was

dying lost without God, and the lake meant

nothing. Nobody can help him now. Too late.
