  • I respect what they were trying to do but the haka has to be done in a respectful way which harnesses its mana and authority.

  • Im not from new zealand.....and I find this disgraceful.

  • @Zanymane wow you're so funny

  • OK, i wld understand if the haka was done at the fathers tangi and at ONE of the games but i dnt understand why they have done it at more then one game. Its not like byu is a small country town on the east coast of NZ. Its a American school football team. To do it once in memory for the father is one thing but to claim it for ur american football team is another, even if one of them is maori.

  • Let me clear this up to any bigots out there. And this is from Wikipedia so its not that hard to be educated. Byu did the haka to commemorate the passing of the father of a player who was maori and was greatly respected there. In Hawaii they develop their own haka called the ha'a which is 100% authentic Hawaiian. Any other team that adopted the haka was probably due to a maori decendent player. So yea educate yourselves

  • This kiwi say:

I dnt understand why a college football team in usa is doing our haka? Noone can do it like a kiwi and its one of the strongest acts of our culture. Shld we do a African war dnace before we play League, or a aboriginal war dance before we play soccer? I find it really weird that any other country wld do our haka, even if there is a maori leading the chant or not. Do they know what its like to be Maori and do they know the history of the Maori? I doubt it...

  • Who cares who does the Haka,

    They are embracing our culture!

I don't understand why this has turned into a debate?

    Ti hei Mauriora!

  • why dont you do an american indian war dance before your games as they are americas native people instead of a maori haka, which is why new zealand do it cause maoris are our native people

  • The player leading the Haka was Maori. his grandfather is a chief in the pacific and his father died, and they performed the haka as a sign of remembrance for his father. From there it started to become a tradition for BYU Football up until recently. The BYU Rugby team has their own personal haka they perform composed by one of their coaches
