I think the reason why the far side of the Uncanny Valley is so disturbing is that we must assign the object to either "HUMAN" or "ROBOT." A being like C3PO is still a robot but he's cute because he ACTS like a human. He does not look like one. The very-close-to-human androids and gynoids are assigned subconsciously to "HUMAN" but seem defective in some way and we are repulsed. They're like disfigured humans not robots. We look for flaws in them but not C3PO because he doesn't even come close.

I don't think it's just about death and dying. Children have a wider and deeper uncanny valley, some just can't stand puppets, clowns or santa. Those don't resemble death, but children get even more horrified specially when such characters look at them with a smile without blinking for too long. Oh yeah, without blinking for too long = death. Interesting.

@beertjeslisser No, at the beginning shes is normal then some 2D motion tracked masks kick in, nothing special.

Why do research? I am autistic. Autistic people can't read emotions on peoples faces, so it's hard to tell the difference between a fake smile or a genuine smile. Thus, the uncanny valley doesn't really make autistic people feel uncomfortable and if it does, then it's not until the very very bottom of the valley.

Humans are hard wired to see faces, even when they aren't there. We see Jesus on tortillas. And we are thus hard wired to know a FAKE facial expression, and why most of these androids aren't so bad until they give one of those horrible SMILES. We'll anthropomorphize a robot that acts human in our heads, without it having to look at all human-- WALL-E and Johnny 5 are great examples of this, so stop wasting silicone on fake skin and make me a robot who can do my damn laundry.
