Actually there are plenty of CGI effects in the movie. To its credit, it always uses the sparingly and subtly, but they are there. The first time a movie used CGI imagery was back in 1973, Westworld to be precise. So City of lost Children is hardy long before CGI.

well call me very ignominious and stupid (!!!!!).. but comparing this movie to Bioshock actually made me love it more!

I stand corrected! I always thought the imaginary monster and those lasers were considered CGI which would have been amazing for its time.

No mate, there weren't even any computers back then in the traditional sense. It uses matte painting superimposed on a green screen, cycloramas, detailed mockup sets and electronically controled props like Robby.

Westworld was the very first movie to use 2D CGI, while the sequel Futureworld was the first to have 3D CGI, it in fact used the first CGI shot EVER, this hand created by folks at the University of Utah:: /watch?v=T5seU-5U0ms along with a face they made later on: /watch?v=SPMFhcC4SvQ

Wasn't Forbidden Planet (1956) the first to use CGI?

If Tim Burton was an acid and made a movie loosely based on Dark City, Bioshock and perhaps a touch of Harry Potter, you would get this movie.

Brazil is the only one able to compet in that category.

They just released " L'ecume des jours " in France and I wish so much that Jeunet&Caro realized it too. You may read the book though, it's somehow connected. Viel Spass
