Storm chasers Chad Cowan, Darin Brunin and Jordan Wrecke were in perfect position to document this amazing, photogenic tornado that occurred near Grainola, OK on February 27, 2011. The tornado eventually crossed the OK/KS border, and remained over open country for its lifespan. Chad shot this video with the Canon 5D Mark II with a 17-40mm f/4L wide angle lens.

Like the opening shot? You can help send Chad to South America by voting in the National Geographic contest, below! We appreciate your support!

Chad will be one of the only chasers filming exclusively with an HDSLR this season! Expect more of the same from his future videos -- only closer next time!

  • Nice job guys. Always nice to see a video of a stormchase without reed timmer's awful voice ruining it.

  • Whenever Reed Timmer talks I just turn the sound off.

  • thats a sad funnel. ive seen...well been through worse. it went over my house. it was awsome. (like for smileys) :) :( >:( >:) lol

  • In the beginning of this video it looks like that was a funnel cloud.Awesome cone shape tornado by the way!!! I wanna be a storm chaser when i grow up so badly!!!

  • @flightoftheunknown even though i think reed timmer is awesome, i do agree with u...

  • i thought it was really cool to see how a tornado forms

  • @HammyDoodles123 The air is caught over a thermal, which causes the spiraling. The air is whirling, as it exchanges places, a sort of updraft is formed, causing this to form the funnel you see. It relies on the air energy of motion to keep spinning. Otherwise, they would be much like hurricanes and last for a very long time. :D!
